GreenGrid Energy Completes 50MW Solar Installation for Texas School District Consortium
HOUSTON, Texas, April 9, 2026 /Pitchwire/ /Pitchwire/ — GreenGrid Energy today announced the completion of a 50-megawatt distributed solar installation across 47 schools in the Greater Houston Independent School District Consortium, the largest school-district solar project in Texas history.
The installation, which includes rooftop panels on gymnasium and cafeteria buildings plus ground-mounted arrays on unused athletic field margins, is projected to save the consortium $4.2 million annually in electricity costs and offset 38,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
"School districts spend between 6% and 9% of their operating budgets on energy — money that could go to teachers, textbooks, and technology," said Robert Vasquez, CEO of GreenGrid Energy. "This project redirects those dollars back to education while teaching students about renewable energy through the monitoring dashboards we install in every school."
Each participating school receives a real-time energy dashboard displayed on a common-area screen, showing current solar generation, grid consumption, and carbon offset metrics. The dashboards are integrated into the STEM curriculum at participating schools.
The project was financed through a power purchase agreement (PPA) requiring no upfront capital from the school districts. GreenGrid owns and maintains all equipment for the 25-year contract term.
GreenGrid Energy has completed over 200MW of commercial and institutional solar installations across Texas since 2021.
